Ben Hieber, the Saline teenager who should have been enjoying a freshman year full of experiences with bandmates and lacrosse teammates, passed away Monday afternoon at Mott Hospital in Ann Arbor. He was the son of Matthew and Sara Hieber
Matthew, who has been relaying the news of Ben’s health struggles on the CaringBridge website, reported the heartbreaking news Monday evening.
“With a very heavy heart I'm writing to share the awful news that Ben passed away this evening in the PICU at Mott,” Matthew wrote. “I stare at those words and can hardly believe it, but it is true. It comes as a huge shock to all of us...and also to the medical people who were caring for him.”
On Feb. 3, Hieber underwent surgery to remove a germ cell tumor. The entire tumor was removed during the surgery, but Hieber suffered a number of setbacks on the road to recovery.
As an eighth grader, Hieber was one of the middle school’s top musicians and lacrosse players. The community has rallied around Hieber, marching for him under the “Brave for Ben” banner during the homecoming parade, creating a video for him and supporting the family.
