The Saline Hornets boys’ track and field team opened their conference schedule like a team poised to defend their SEC Red title.
Competing at home Tuesday, Saline defeated Pioneer, 103-34.
Junior John Smutny won the shot put and discus and was Saline’s only double winner.
Smutny won the discus with a throw of 147-05. Nic Sawyer was second (126) and Ben Elliot was third (118-08).
Smutny also showed great form in the shot put, where he threw 50-08.5 to win. Sawyer was second with a throw of 45-11. Matthew Cole was third with a throw of 40-08.25.
Saline’s other victory in the field came in high jump, where Brad McCormick cleared 5-08. Joey Leptich also cleared 5-08 and finished second.
McCormick was .75 inches away from winning the long jump. He leaped 19-06 to take second. Kevin Gross was third with a leap of 19-01.
Kaj Althaus was Saline’s top vaulter, clearing 12-06.
On the track, Jesse Ouellete won the 100 dash in 11:56 seconds, beating fellow senior Gabe Becton by 1/10th of a second. Tyler Palka was fourth in 11.70 seconds.
Sophomore Skyler Bowden was first in the 200 dash (23.82) . Ouellete (24.02) and McCormick (24.34) finished second and third.
Ryan Gauche won the 400 (52.07). Skyler Bowden and David Elms finished third and fourth.
Andrew Kitto led a four-Hornet pack over the finish line in the 800. Kitto finished in 1:58.33. Anthony Lamus was second (1:59.90). Ryan Wilkie and Matthew Elems were third and fourth.
John Dolsen was Saline’s top runner in the 1600, finishing 3rd in 4:47.31.
Senior Grant Praschan was first in the 3200 (9:51.79). Sophomore Kevin Hall was second in 9:54.44.
Joey Leptich and Hunter Krebs took second and third in the 110 hurdles. Leptich was second in the 300 hurdles.
