Saline sophomore Cam McPherson won the regional diving championship Thursday at Ann Arbor Huron School.
McPherson tallied 490.9 points to win her first-ever regional. McPherson won the SEC Red meet last week.
She’s one of four Hornet divers who advanced to the state meet.
Sophomore Amy Stevens, the defending state champion, was third with 458.9 points. Junior Miranda Eberle, who finished third in the state last year, was fourth with 448 points. Sophomore Emmi Ruela was eights with 379.3 points.
Saline dive coach Jeff Craig said the girls approached the regional with the right attitude.
“This team likes to have fun. They came in and they were relaxed,” Craig said, noting that the Huron pool was cool. “It’s not easy to dive when you’re cold. They did a good job. They stayed happy and they stayed confident.”
McPherson continues to improve. Earlier this, McPherson and Stevens broke the six-dive school and pool record, with Stevens setting the new mark. At the SEC Red meet at Saline, McPherson set a new pool 11-dive record with 475.65 points. She also best the 465.15 points that Stevens won the SEC meet with in 2013.
“I worked really hard over the summer at my club. I competed in a lot of club meets and improved a lot over the course of the year,” said McPherson.
McPherson finished a strong sixth at last year’s state meet, but she was a good 75 points back of Stevens’ state championship score. McPherson said it’s helped her to work every day with teammates like Stevens and Eberle.
Stevens said she felt like she had an off-day, Thursday. She’s planning to visit a trainer in Indiana to prepare for next week’s state meet at Eastern Michigan University.
“Obviously I want to defend my state championship and win it again,” Stevens said. “I’ll have a solid week of training. Hopefully I’ll improve. This wasn’t my best. I was a little bit off.”
As a junior, Eberle is the eldest of Saline’s elite divers. She’s “the mom” of the group.
“I love this team so much. We all work so hard and we deserve the places we get,” said Eberle, who’ll be in the mix for spot on the podium again.
Sophomore Emmi Ruela is making her first appearance at the state meet.
“I’m really excited. I just want to do a big cannonball,” Ruela said.
The Saline foursome has the potential to add 40 points or more to the Hornet swim and dive point totals at the state meet, which takes place next Friday and Saturday at Eastern Michigan University.
