A 23-year-old Saline man arrested Sept 22 is suspected of drunk driving and failing to stop at the scene of a crash.
According to the report, shortly after midnight a pickup truck driven by the suspect rear-ended a Toyota vehicle driven by a 36-year-old Saline woman. The woman told police she was in some pain but declined care from Huron Valley Ambulance EMTs and then driven home by police..
The truck left the scene immediately following the crash and was followed by a witness to a residential parking lot. After confirming with the witness that the vehicle was involved in the incident, police determined the identity of the suspect. Police were granted access to the suspect's apartment by his roommate and found the suspect sleeping in his bed. The suspect told police that he wasn’t hurt in the crash, according to the report. When asked if he stopped to check on the woman in the crash, the suspect said, “not so much,” according to the report. He told police he had a pitcher of beer at the bowling alley before driving home..The suspect told police he was on Michigan Avenue and was distracted when he crashed into the Toyota and he said he “freaked out” and left the scene, according to the report. He was arrested and transported to the Saline Police Department. Breathalyzer tests showed a blood alcohol content of .14.
Police are seeking a warrant for operating while impaired and a hit and run crash.
Cigars Taken From Local Business
An employee at The Smoke Shop, 521 E. Michigan Ave., told police a suspect took five or six $10 cigars Sept. 21.
At 5 p.m., a white male wearing a green and white ball cap and a green Miami Hurricanes jacket came into the store and began looking around. He went into the humidor and asked the clerk a question, causing the clerk to walk away from the monitors. The suspect later appeared nervous and left without purchasing anything, departing from the parking lot in what the clerk thought was a red Chevy Cobalt. The clerk noted the man’s pockets appeared to be bulging. After the suspect left, the clerk watched video showing the man grabbing five or six cigars and putting them in his pockets.
Vehicle Impounded After Man Cited from Drinking in SUV
A 29-year-old Belleville man was cited for having open intoxicants in the vehicle Sept. 22. Police received a tip from employees at a Michigan Avenue fast food restaurant that there was a black SUV with no plates parked in their lot. Employees were preparing to leave and asked police to check on the vehicle.
Police found a 29-year-old man sitting in the passenger seat, texting on his phone. A brown paper bag between his legs contained an open bottle of beer. He told police he was drinking because he got into a fight with his ex-fiancee. Records showed his license was suspended. A breathalyzer showed a blood alcohol content over the legal limit for driving, but police couldn’t prove he was driving. The vehicle, which did not belong to the suspect, was impounded.
Gas Gan Taken from Garage
A Williams Street man reported that someone entered his garage and stole a six-gallon can of gas sometime overnight Sept 17-18. Someone also entered the truck parked in the garage, but nothing was missing. The garage was unlocked.
