There were no serious injuries in a peculiar car crash and fire on South Maple Road in Saline Township Tuesday afternoon.

At about 4 p.m., the Saline Area Fire Department was dispatched to the site of a car fire on South Maple Road near Saline-Milan Road. Firefighters found a vehicle fully engulfed in flames. While putting out the fire, firefighters noticed the front of the vehicle was damaged and airbags were deployed, said Saline Fire Chief Craig Hoeft.  It appeared the vehicle had struck a tree, Hoeft said.

But what the firefighters couldn’t find was a driver.

“We looked around to see if there was a driver around and we couldn’t find the person. We did a walk up and down the ditch and searched the surroundings,” Hoeft said.

According to Hoeft, a Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Department deputy used vehicle information to locate the driver at home. After the crash, the driver left the scene for help, Hoeft said. At the time, the fire hadn’t started yet.
