The Saline Area Fire Department extinguished a fire before it caused major damage to the Weller’s Carriage House Friday afternoon.

The fire department was dispatched to building, located behind Weller’s main building, at about 3 p.m. for reports of smoke and flames. A handyman was soldering pipes in a bathroom along the south wall.

“They were repairing some plumbing when the fire got going in the wall. There was a lot of smoke and some fire when we got here,” Saline Fire Chief Craig Hoeft said. “We got it knocked down pretty quick.”

Firefighters had the blaze extinguished in minutes but remained on the scene working for more than an hour.

“The problem is, with older buildings that have had a lot of remodeling and work, the smoke can get up into compartments. So we had some work to do to make sure it didn’t rekindle,” Hoeft said.

The Weller’s Carriage House was built by Henry Ford behind Schuyler’s Mill after Ford moved the mill to its current location. The factory was used as a theater house for years.

Today, the Weller’s Carriage House is a 232-seat banquet facility used for weddings and other events.
