At the risk of pulling the scab off a fresh wound, I thought local Hornet fans should know that Mattawan has won the MHSAA Division 1 softball championship.

Last week, in the quarterfinal at Michigan State University, Mattawan defeated Saline 7-3 in extra innings.

It was was a heartbreaking loss for the Hornets, who led 2-0 and then 3-2 going into the seventh inning. But the Hornets had the state champs on the brink of elimination, and took them to extra innings.

That's something of which the Hornet softball family can be proud.

Earlier this season, the Hornet football team lost to Cass Tech, 21-14, in the regional final. It was the closest Cass Tech came to defeat on the way to the state championship.

Saline's boys' swim and dive team did win a state championship this year -- it's fourth straight.
