Steven Bastien, who was named Michigan's Mr. Track & Field as a Saline High School senior in 2012, competed at the USA Track & Field Junior Nationals at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa.
Bastien, who now competes for Samford University in Homewood, Ala., placed fourth in the junior decathlon. Bastien qualified as an alternate for Team USA in the Pan Am Junior Athletics Championships, in Medellin, Colombia, Aug. 23-25.
The event was won by Wolf Mahler, of Belton High School in Texas, who finished with 7,419 points. Bastien was fourth with 7,185 points.

- 100 meter dash - 3rd, 11.02
- 400 meter dash - 4th, 49.72
- 1500 meter run - 5th, 4:39.92

- 110 meter hurdles - 9th, 14.94
- Discus - 18th, 109-9
- Shot put - 19th, 36-1.5
Bastien's freshman season at Samford was a success. He won three conference titles and set indoor and outdoor school records. At SoCon Indoor championships, Bastien set a school record while winning the long jump (23.7-25). He also won the heptathlon and was named Most Outstanding Field Performer and Freshman of the Year. In the SoCon Outdoor championships, Bastien won the long jump. Earlier in the season, he set the new Samford record, jumping 24-1.
