Enjoy a retrospective of the Saline Area Players'  40 years of community entertainment at an anniversary gala, at 8 p.m., Saturday, at Liberty School's auditorium. The show will include performances of stars of the past, photos of past shows, cameo appearances of colorful characters and group singing. Hear songs from South Pacific, Oklahoma, My Fair Lady, Annie, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Bye Bye Birdie and others. 

Tickets are $10 each, which includes the show and the afterglow party at Mac's. 

We asked members of the Saline Area Players to reflect on 40 years of enriching the Saline community.

 

Doug Harris
What was it like on stage the first time? Scary and exhilarating!
What was your first play: Nuncrackers (2003)
What was the best Saline Area Players production? Different shows are favorites for different reasons.
What does the Saline Area Players mean to you? It is sort of like a family. It's really nice seeing a group of people working together towards a common goal and having fun.
What's something you want the Players to take on? Dinner theater has been a big part of SAP's history. It would be nice to see that again.

 

Olivianna Calmes
What was it like on stage the first time? It was wonderful the first time, because a person can be someone different than themselves.
What was your first play? Sound of Music, 2011
What was the best Saline Area Players production? Sound of Music!
What does the Saline Area Players mean to you? The Saline Area Players give everyone the oppertunity to shine, and be crazy and fun. The friends I made there I will NEVER forget.
What's something you want the Players to take on? I think they should do Saline's own version of High School Musical. So many people from Salinewould come!

 

Kara Fay Cardella
What was it like on stage the first time? My first onstage experience with SAP was The Wizard of Oz and it was a lot of fun and very exciting!
What was your first play? The very first play I was in was in Ohio: O Where Has My Little Dog Gone, 1985
What was the best Saline Area Players production? I'm a bit partial to You Can't Take It With You
What does the Saline Area Players mean to you? Saline Area Players means DEDICATION.  The Players work diligently to bring quality theater to the area.

 

Carol Melcher
What was it like on stage the first time? A little frightening, but very exciting.
What was your first play: Carousel, I think. About 1984
What was the best Saline Area Players production? Each production has had its highlights. I can't name the best. The SAP ala Carte was great fun as it brought back memories.
What does the Saline Area Players mean to you? Community. Sharing. Fun. Connection. Theater. Music. Love.
What's something you want the Players to take on? I think the cabaret shows are well received.

What was it like on stage the first time? So much fun with great people!
What was your first play? How to Succeed in Business without Really Trying...1983 I think.
What was the best Saline Area Players production? For me..,Carousel...my two sons Kenny and Todd joined me on stage.
What does the Saline Area Players mean to you? Wonderful memories of wonderful people and the chance to do what I love...sing!

 

Jane Arvidson Panikkar
What was your first play? Annie Get Your Gun (1994?)
What does the Saline Area Players mean to you? From an early age, SAP awakened in me a love for live theater.

 

Donald Shelton
What was it like on stage, the first time? I had no idea what I was getting into and ended up being cast as the lead in the "Archie Bunker" role in "Never Too Late"
What was your first play? "Never Too Late" 1976
What was the best Saline Area Players production? Oklahoma
What does the Saline Area Players mean to you? I ended up doing over 20 SAP shows and enjoyed what is truly a "community" theater.

 

Susan Toth Bernard
What was it like on stage the first time? Scary, but cool
What was your first play? Brigadoon 1974
What was the best Saline Area Players production? Any one I was in, lol.
What does the Saline Area Players mean to you? I "grew up" in SAP, many fond memories and fun times; gave me a real appreciation for theatre. SAP has always been extended family.

 

Brad Pritts
What was it like on stage the first time? I greatly enjoyed the chance to be on stage with the Players. There was some stage fright but it was exciting at the same time.
What was your first play: Annie 1992
What was the best Saline Area Players production? Really hard to say... but Sound of Music 2011 would be a strong contender. Great cast, great music and a wonderful book.
What does the Saline Area Players mean to you? As some others have said, this group is a family--many long time warm connections; shared work and fun; occasional grief.
What's something you want the Players to take on? To me the most important thing is to always be welcoming to new people while staying connected with long time members.

What was your first play? Finnean's Rainbow, 1994
What was the best Saline Area Players production? A Funny Thing Happened OnThe Way To The Forum
What does the Saline Area Players mean to you? Fun and camaraderie.  Newcomers and kids are shown encouragement.  Lifelong friendships.  Great memories from the shows.

 

Alison Robison
What was it like on stage, the first time? The first time on stage, I felt like "I was born to do this!"  It was a little unnerving, a lot electric, the best place to be!
What was your first play? Sleeping Beauty in 6th grade (1962)
What was the best Saline Area Players production? Hands down "South Pacific"
What does the Saline Area Players mean to you? The best opportunity to perform quality theater, right in our own community. Fabulous people, supportive audiences. I'm blessed.

 

Sara Honsowetz
What was it like on stage the first time? Gratifying and thrilling to take on a new persona.
What was your first play: "Cooking With Gus" was my first SAP production back in 2002 and I was Gus.
What was the best Saline Area Players production? Oh, my! There have been so many, but "Wizard of Oz" definitely drew the largest audiences and was a great hit with all ages.
What does the Saline Area Players mean to you? It means a chance to share and be a part of the greater community, getting to know new people...fun and challenging adventures.
What's something (a play, a concept) you want the Players to take on? It would be fun to do a Shakespeare spoof.

What was it like on stage the first time? Fun!  Small audience,  loads of laughs!

What does the Saline Area Players mean to you? Family involvement/many friends
