The Saline High School boys' golf team improved by five strokes on final day to take fifth at the MHSAA Division 1 golf finals at Michigan State University's Forest Akers West Saturday.

Saline improved from 311 on Friday to 306 on Saturday. The Hornets finished witha  two-day total of 617, which tied Traverse City West for fifth best at the state tournament. Battle Creek Lakeview and Plymouth each scored 601 during the two-day tournament. Lakeview won the state championship based on the fifth-player scores.

Ian Martin continued his terrific tournament. Martin fired a round of 75 and finished with a two-day total of 149. Martin's score was the sixth best in the tournament.

A big reason Saline's improvement was Caleb Wittig, who shaved four strokes off his day one total to finish with 75. His two-day total was 154. Ryan Peruski also improved on his day-one total (79) by firing a 78. Matt de Irala also helped Saline's cause. He came in for Alex Derksen as the Hornets' fifth golfer  and shot a 78, which was important because James Alcock's score climbed by four strokes Saturday.

In 2012, Saline finished 9th with a two-day score of 624. The Hornets were 12th in 2011 with a score of 646.

The fifth place finish marked another strong season for the Hornets. The Hornets won every SEC tournament until the league meet, when they were upset by Skyline. The Hornets placed second to Plymouth in the district tournament and then won the regional tournament.
