Slowly but surely, CANI Nails at 962 E. Michigan Ave. in The Oaks shopping complex is building up its client base with word of mouth recommendations since opening for business in early July.

The owners are a married couple, Kevin and Stephanie Vu, who are both certified nail techs. They said they're often asked if "CANI" is a family name, but it actually is an acronym for "Come and Nail It."

Kevin Vu moved from Vietnam to Atlanta in 2009 and, while living with relatives, earned his nail tech certification. He went back to Vietnam to marry Stephanie and bring her back to the U.S. where she, too, earned a nail tech certification from a Vietnamese-owned school in Atlanta.

"She's always behind me, supporting me," Kevin Vu said.

A few years after his arrival in Atlanta, Kevin Vu's uncle invited him to move to Michigan with him, where they both worked as nail techs in Saline for about 3 years. Then his uncle moved to Troy, and Kevin Vu moved to Ann Arbor for a time. But he missed Saline.

"I love Saline a lot, and I love the people around here," Vu said. "The customers are so kind and friendly. I know almost everybody when I walk through Wal-mart, and they say, 'Hi Kevin, how are you doing?'"

Vu said Saline is "my town," and that opening up a nail salon made him feel like he was "back home."

The co-owners threw an open house July 8 and opened for business July 9. At first, they were the only two nail techs, but two more techs have since come on board. As business grows, they said they're looking to hire more nail techs.

The salon offers about 1,000 colors of artificial nails and updates nail colors every season. They also offer a variety of services, from regular manicures and pedicures to acrylic and gel nails to nail art.

Hours of operation are 10 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, 10 a.m.-6:30 p.m. Saturdays, and 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Sundays. The couple closes the store to give staff a break the third Sunday of each month.

The store runs regular discount specials, including a special social media deal through the end of October. Contact the store at 734-882-8699 for details.
