Ho! Ho! Ho!
The inaugural Merry Mile is a one mile run that will take place on Michigan Avenue before the annual Christmas Parade on Dec. 7.
Runners and walkers will start at the four corners, head east on Michigan Avenue and then turn around at Old Creek/Maple, finishing near Monroe Street.
The Merry Mile begins at 5 p.m. and should conclude by 5:20 p.m. The parade starts at 5:30 p.m.
The event is hosted by the Friends of Saline Cross Country and will benefit the school cross country programs.
Saline City Council voted 7-0 to approve the event. It will come at no extra cost to the city, since the streets will already be blocked off.
Derek Stern organized the Memorial Day Mile before the Memorial Day parade several years ago. He said the event will give people the chance to do something they usually don’t get to do – run down Michigan Avenue.
Sterm said fees will be waived for kids under 10 running with family.
Stern said he hopes the event raises awareness about the cross country team and helps the program’s scholarship fund.
Councillor Heidi McClelland said her kids ran in the Memorial Day mile and they enjoyed it, even though they aren’t runners.
“It’s a great community event,” McClelland said.
Councillor Linda TerHaar asked Stern if he anticipates walkers in the event.
“As long as people are finished by 5:20 p.m., they can participate,” Stern said.
