The Washtenaw County Road Commission will hold a construction information meeting on Monday, August 29, 2016, from 6:30 pm – 7:30 pmat Lodi Township Hall (3755 Pleasant Lake Rd) to discuss various construction details for the upcoming intersection improvement project at Ann Arbor-Saline Road and Textile Road. This project is tentatively scheduled to begin September 6, 2016, and be completed by the end of October.

At this upcoming construction information meeting, residents and commuters will have an opportunity to learn details about the project, including proposed detour routes, residents’ access to their property during construction, and projected timelines. Audience members will also be able to ask questions to staff members.

The Washtenaw County Road Commission, with its contractor, will build a compact urban roundabout at the intersection of Ann Arbor-Saline Road and Textile Road to reduce peak period congestion that occurs at the intersection.

A compact roundabout was chosen over a larger, traditional roundabout or a traffic signal for the following reasons: (1) A compact urban roundabout has a smaller footprint. This is important because it requires less right-of-way, which means there are fewer impacts to property owners and resources are saved that can be used on other county infrastructure needs; (2) Roundabouts are statistically safer than traffic signals. A trade-off occurs between high speed, t-bone collisions that occur when a driver “beats” a red light for low speed, and sideswipe collisions; (3) With a traffic signal, delay is present 24 hours a day when a driver encounters a red light. At a roundabout, less delay occurs, especially at off-peak hours, due to the yield condition. This aspect is also a benefit to the environment since fewer vehicle emissions are placed into the air; (4) A compact urban roundabout will be less intrusive to the Township cemetery and adjacent corner properties.

As part of this project, Textile Road will also be pulverized and paved from Ann Arbor-Saline Road to a point 185 feet west of Maple Road.

The Ann Arbor-Saline Road at Textile Road intersection will be closed to traffic during this time. Textile Road will also be closed to through-traffic. Property owners with only one point of ingress/egress to their land will be permitted to travel in the work zone. All subdivision entrances will be closed to Textile Road.
