Have you ever wondered why cross country teams race seven runners when only the top five score points?
Saline's 6th and 7th runners didn't score any points for the Hornets as Saline won Thursday's SEC Red Championship jamboree and clinched its third straight SEC Red Conference title.
But they made all the difference in the world as Saline edged Pioneer by a single point, 36-37.
Pioneer's Costa Willets and Galen Burrel went 1-2. Saline's Dylan Jennings, Grant Praschan and Anthony Lamus finished in the next three places. Pioneer's Lucas Arrivo was 10th and Saline's Kevin Hall was 11th.
With four runners each over the finish line, Pioneer led by four points
Andrew Kitto was the next over the line, finishing 13th. Pioneer's next runner over the line Dan Fonte, was 18th. The five place differnce gave Saline the five-point swing it needed to win the race.
Two of the runners between Kitto and Fonte were Saline's Matthew Elms and John Dolsen. Though neither runner scored, the prevented Fonte the 16th place finish that would have given Pioneer the race victory and a share of the overall SEC Red Championship.
All seven Saline runners earned all-conference honors.
