Officer Andrew Hartwig was sworn in as a sergeant of the Saline Police Department at Monday's Saline City Council meeting.

A 12-year veteran of the SPD, Hartwig raised his right hand and swore to protect the constitutions of the United States and of Michigan, and swore to faithfully perform the duties as sergeant.

His sons, Avery and Nolan, placed the insignia on their father's collar. His wife, Heather, pinned his new sergeant's badge to his uniform. City Manager Todd Campbell gave Hartwig his sergeant's stripes and promotional certificate.

"I'm very proud to be able to accept this promotion and very thankful to work in this city. I've always enjoyed this nice community we have here, and I look forward to doing my best to keep it the nice, lovely little community that it is," Hartwig said.

The ceremony concluded when Hartwig and all other officers in the city hall chamber stood and followed Police Chief Larry Hrinik reciting the oath of honor.

Mayor Pro-Tem Linda TerHaar thanked Hartwig for his service and commitment to the community.

"On behalf of the entire community, I wish you all the best in this new position," TerHaar said.

Hartwig began his career with the Saline Police Department in November of 2001. He graduated from the Police Corps and earned a bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice from Michigan State University. Hartwig is the department's firearms instructor, field training officer, and ALICE (Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter and Evacuate) instructor.

His nickname is "Al," in honor of his father, a retired Ann Arbor police officer.

Hartwig and his wife, Heather, have two sons, Nolan and Avery.

Hartwig joins Jay Basso, Bridget Seames and Theo Helms in the sergeant ranks. A sergeant position opened up when Officer Chris Boulter resigned his sergeant's position for personal reasons, Chief Hrinik said.
