A 19-year-old Saline man is dead following a two-car collision at the intersection of Moon and Bemis roads in York Township.
Alcohol is believed to be a factor in the crash that sent three others two hospital.
The crash was reported at 2:23 p.m. Police arrived on the scene and found two cars crashed near the intersection -- a Mercury Mountaineer and a grey sedan. There were three occupants pinned in the sedan, according to the radio dispatch. Saline Area Fire, Washtenaw County Sheriff's Office and Pittsfield Fire responded to the scene.
"Preliminary reports indicate a southbound vehicle ran the stop sign at a high rate of speed, colliding with an eastbound vehicle. The eastbound vehicle was hit in the driver’s side, killing the driver," said Washtenaw County Sheriff Sgt. David Archer. "It appears that alcohol was a factor in the crash."
All of the occupants in the sedan were under 21 and from the Saline area, according to Archer.
Two were transported to hospital in critical condition.
The driver of the Mountaineer was transported to hospital in stable condition.
Police declined to reveal the victim's name until his parents were notified.
The intersection was closed for several hours as police investigated the scene.
With July 4 approaching an many planning barbecues and parties, Archer reminded people to stay safe.
"Don't drink and drive. Drive defensively. If you see something on the roadway the piques your interest that’s just not right, call 911 and let us figure it out," Archer said. "We’d rather have someone call and it turn out to be nothing than someone not call and have it turn out to be a tragedy like what appears to have happened today."
