Saline Firefighters prevented a field fire from spreading near Schill Road in Saline Township Sunday evening.
Firefighters were dispatched to the fire at 6:12 p.m. The fire was in a field south of Austin Road and west of Schill Road.
"A combine caught fire - which is not uncommon when wheat harvesting. It spread - mostly into the wheat stubble," Fire Chief Craig Hoeft said.
The combine suffered major damage but it could have been worse for the farmer.
"Fortunately, the combine caught fire on wheat stubble instead of the wheat," Hoeft said.
The fire department was assisted by firefighters from Clinton and Manchester. The Washtenaw County Sheriff's Office closed westbound Michigan Avenue at Austin Road.
It was the Saline department's second field fire call in two days. Saturday, firefighters were dispatched to Waters Road near Tessmer Road. That fire was mostly contained by the time firefighters arrived.
