Saline gave up six first-quarter offensive rebounds,  which Huron converted into ten points, and that was the difference in the game as the Hornets lost to the host River Rats, 58-47, Tuesday. Saline's record fell to 8-7 overall and 4-5 in the SEC Red Division.

“We gave up ten points from offensive rebounds and against a team like Huron you can’t expect to win when that happens,” said Saline Head Coach Jacob Fosdick. The River Rats held a huge advantage over the Hornets on the boards, out-rebounding Saline 29-11, including 13 offensive rebounds.

The River Rats, coming off a loss last Friday to the Skyline Eagles, are still ranked in the top five in the state and their win over the Hornets confirmed that they remain one fn the top teams in the SEC Red Division

Saline jumped out to a 7-2 lead following two buckets by senior guard Griffin Yaklich and a three-point shot by senior Tyler Belskus.  Huron then went on a 9-0 run to regain the lead 11-7, a lead they would never relinquish.  Junior forward Anthony Ferrari scored the Hornets’ last five points of the opening quarter to cut the River Rats’ lead to 16-12 heading into the second quarter.

Following an opening three-point shot by Huron, Yaklich was able to convert two drives to the net to draw Saline within four, 21-17 with 5:11 left in the half.  Belskus hit a short jump shot to pull the Hornets to within two, 21-19.  The Rats then hit another three to go up 24-19.  Senior guard Trevor Arico and Yaklich connected on two drives through the tight Huron defense to cut Huron’s lead to 24-23.

The Rats then went on another 6-0 run before Arico put up a last second shot that rolled around the rim and fell through with less than a second left.  The Hornets went to the locker room trailing 30-25 at the half.

Any time Saline would pull close in the second half, the River Rats responded with a three-point shot or converted an offensive rebound into quick points.  Huron grabbed eight offensive rebounds in the second half.

Junior guard Derek Caldwell got things rolling hitting a three-pointer from the corner to open the Hornet scoring in the second half.  Arico connected for six third quarter points and Yaklich two more but Huron added to their lead, 43-36 going to the final quarter.

It was the seniors, Arico, Belskus and Yaklich who scored all eleven Hornet points in the fourth quarter, but the talent of the River Rats’ team was too much as Saline lost 58-47.  The Hornets will close out their SEC Red Division play on Friday when they host the Skyline Eagles.  Tip-off time is 7 p.m.
