Logan Evans led Saline with 16 points.

The Saline Hornets varsity hoops squad closed out the 2018 portion of their schedule with a resounding 66-43 win over the Southgate Anderson Titans, upping their season record to 5-2. In typical fashion, the Hornets used a tenacious defense to force turnovers which were quickly converted to points.

Senior center forward Logan Evans opened the scoring when he took the ball to the hoop and converting his foul shot. Freshman guard Cooper Fairman then connected to give Saline a 5-2 lead.

Junior guard Griffin Yaklich and senior guard Peter Jacobsen upped the lead to 9-2 with a little under four minutes to go in the quarter. Following a Southgate foul shot, junior guard Trevor Arico entered the game for the first time this season. As Arico entered the game, Yaklich was seen running down the court with a smile on his face.

The wait was over. “Thunder” and “Lightning” were finally together again.

The Hornets inbounded the ball and Jacobsen brought it up court. He passed it to Yaklich who made a no look pass to Arico. Arico pivoted at the top of the key and swished a three-pointer. And “Thunder” and “Lightning” announced their presence.

Exactly 22 seconds later, Yaklich spotted Arico in the corner who added two more points jumping Saline’s lead to 14-4.

Yaklich added five points of his own and Arico closed out the Hornet scoring sinking two free throws, with Saline holding a 21-13 first quarter lead.

Defensively, Evans and Yaklich blocked two shots and Belskus one.

Evans opened the second quarter with another three-pointer before the Titans had 5-0 run to cut Saline’s lead to 24-18. Arico, Jacobsen, Evans, Yaklich and Fairman all added points to send Saline to the locker room at the half leading 35-26.

Saline Head Coach Jacob Fosdick said after the game that he wasn’t satisfied with his team’s play in the first half. “I told the guys in the locker room at the half that Southgate scored seven points off of offensive rebounds and we needed to do a better job on the boards.”

“I was really pleased with our energy on defense in the second half, especially in the fourth quarter. I challenged them and they responded very well,” Fosdick said.

Yaklich and Arico scored 8 of Saline’s 11 third quarter points as the Hornets outscored Southgate 11-9 to take a 46-35 lead into the final quarter.

Evans opened the scoring in the final quarter banking a shot off the backboard for three. Fairman and Belskus added buckets. Shortly before the starters headed to the bench, Yaklich added two more points.

Sophomore forward Nathan Holmberg, Anthony Ferrari and Derek Caldwell closed out the Hornets’ scoring to give Saline a 66-43 win.

“Trevor (Arico) provides us with another weapon and a different kind of spark on offense,” Fosdick said. “With him returning it requires adjustments from the other players. Peter (Jacobsen) is such an experienced player he handles those adjustments so well we don’t even need to run them in practice.”

So, the 2018 games are over. The Hornets probably beat the teams they should have, and lost to the teams they weren’t expected to beat. They are learning about themselves and what it takes to be competitive in the SEC Red Division.

The SEC Red Division, sometimes referred to as the “Death Valley division” of basketball in Michigan. The Hornets will take a short break for the Holidays and get back into action on Friday, 1-11-19 when the will host the Bedford Kicking Mules. Tip off time is 7 p.m.

The JV squad raced out to an 11-0 lead and never looked back as they beat the Southgate Anderson Titans 66-23 to raise their season record to 6-1. Ten players scored in the game as Head Coach Jason Pickett played every player on his bench.

“Yu will have good games on offense and down days, but you are never criticized for playing too hard on defense. So that is what we do, we put energy into playing defense and our offense flows from that,” Pickett said.

“I thought we handled the ball pretty well tonight and played very tough on defense,” Pickett said, “though there are still areas we can improve.”

The Hornets were led by sophomore guard Nicholas Walper’s 16 points, Luke Darmos’ 9, Bryce Wizner’s 8. Sophomore Benjamin Sundquist, Eli Trese and Zackary Mitzel had 6, freshman Evan Merillat had 3 and Zachary Socha and Elijah Lewis each had two.

Sophomore Elijah Lewis scored his two points when he went to the free throw line and calmly sank them both. As he was running down the court, his personal cheering section raised their voices to let him know they were proud of him.

Faye and Donald Lewis, Elijah’s grandparents, were on hand to watch their grandson. When Elijah converted his free throws, Faye, his grandmother, jumped up out of her seat to let everyone around her know “THAT’S MY GRANDSON. THAT’S MY BABY.”

Ms. Lewis, all of Saline are proud of him, and proud of his family for being so supportive of this young hoopster.
