The Saline varsity girls basketball team opened 2019 with two victories in Traverse City.

Friday, Saline defeated Traverse City West, 61-42. Saturday, Saline rolled to a 67-27 victory over Traverse City Central.

In Friday’s game, Ella Stemmer scored 14 points and had two steals and seven rebounds. Steffi Bentley scored 12 and grabbed six rebounds. Nicole Sweetland had 11 points and two steals.

Also making the scorebook were Maddy Welch (five points, six rebounds), Erin Reilly (five points, three rebounds, two steals, two assists), Leeya Lawson (four points), Sophia Gasparovic (four points, four rebounds), Fiona Morcom (three points), Liz Sekerak (two points, two rebounds) and Kelsey Alexander (one point, five rebounds).

On Saturday, Stemmer exploded for 31 points to lead the Hornets. She also had three rebounds, four steals and three assists. Sweetland scored 11 points and had three rebounds and five steals. Welch chipped in with seven points, three rebounds and three steals.

Other contributors included Alexander (four points, three rebounds, three steals and four assists), Gasparovic (four points), Bentley (two points, three rebounds, three blocks), Morcon (two points), Reilly (two points, four assists), Sekerak (two points, three steals), Emily Wilcyzinski (two points) and Lawson (three rebounds, two steals).

Saline opens the SEC Red season Friday at rival Bedford.
