Fortino and Wood Lead Hornets to 2nd Place Finish at XC Regional

Senior Kayla Fortino ran alongside freshman Madi Wood to lead Saline to a second place finish at the MHSAA Division 1 regional race at Lake Erie Metropark Saturday.

Saline finished with 45 points, 19 behind the winning team from Pioneer. Saline, Pioneer and Bedford qualified for the MHSAA State Championship race, held Nov. 3 at Michigan International Speedway.

Fortino and Wood were Saline’s leaders at the SEC Red championship jamboree last week, with Wood finishing ahead of Fortino. This week, Fortino was Saline’s fastest. She finished third in 19:09.1. Wood was right behind her, taking fourth in 19:13.3.

Junior Nicole Dillman was ninth in 19:39.3. Sisters Alexa Stern and Madison Stern completed the Hornet scoring. Alexa, a senior, was 14th in 19:56.9. Madison was 15th in 19:57.6.

Freshman Taylor Yaklich was 19th in 20:21 and junior Ella Woehlke was  25th in 20:31.

Fortino, Wood, Dillman and Alexa Stern earned all region honors.
