The Saline varsity boys soccer team celebrated senior night by clinching sole possession of the SEC Red championship Thursday night.
The Hornets put themselves in the drivers’ seat Tuesday with a 1-0 victory at Skyline – giving Saline the season sweep against the rival and chief challenger for the SEC Red title. Zeke Gray’s breakaway goal stood as the difference in that contest.
The win meant Saline could clinch sole possession of the SEC Red with a tie against Pioneer. The Pioneers came to play. The teams were scoreless after the first half. Pioneer opened the scoring. Noel Sompa scored the equalizer.
The Hornets are unbeaten in the SEC Red, with a 7-0-2 record.
Saline celebrated their senior class Thursday. Prior to the game Devin DeVries, Brendan Foster, Nate Learman, Mitch Kalittta, Cam Bacarella, Logan Dejanovich, Drew Doran, Nolan Fox, Ryan Nichols, Charlie Rogers, Ryan Grill and Quinn Fox were honored.
Saline defeated Rochester Adams, 1-0, Saturday afternoon. Brayden Stavros scored the lone goal. He was set up by Rogers. Saline visits Bedford at 5 p.m., Tuesday.
Saline’s post-season begins at 5 p.m., Oct. 15, when Saline plays host Ypsilanti-Lincoln. The winner will face the winner of the Pioneer-Belleville game at 7 p.m., Oct. 17, at Belleville. Huron, Skyline and Ypsilanti are on the other side of the bracket. The regional tournament is at Dearborn Edsel Ford.
