Two Saline wrestlers took a big step toward the podium this afternoon as the MHSAA wrestling finals began at the Palace of Auburn Hills.
Senior Dylan Powers won by Tech Fall at 189 and Daniel Poupore won a 7-5 decision at 125.
Powers (41-1) defeated Romeo’s Bryan Carie (29-8) by Tech Fall. He’d taken a 16-0 lead when the bout was called off at 4:27.
Powers will wrestle Walled Lake Central’s Nick Onwenu (41-7) in the quarter finals Friday. The winner will advance to the semifinals Friday evening.
At 125, Poupore (44-3) defeated Brighton’s Seth Soto 7-5. Poupore was down 2-0 early after suffering a take down. But he escaped for one point and then took a 3-2 lead with a take down. Soto escaped and they were tied at three after one period. Poupore started the second period on top and kept Soto from scoring. It was still 3-3 after two periods. In the third, Poupore started on bottom and quickly gained two points with a reverse. He picked up two more points late in the match on a near fall, but then gave up a late reversal.
Poupore will wrestle Southfield A&T’s Isiah Berry (40-16) in the quarterfinals.
The championship quarterfinals begin at 10:30 a.m. The championship semifinals begin at 7 p.m.
Tickets for the finals are $11 per session.
