Saline's Emagine Theatre is screening The Russian Five, the documentary about the Detroit Red Wings' legendary Russian hockey players who helped build Hockeytown. The film documents how former Red Wings owner Mike Ilitch and his staff smuggled Sergei Fedorov, Slava Kozlov and Vladimir Konstantinov into the United States just before the Cold War thawed. Then, coach Scotty Bowman brought Red Army legends Igor Larionov and Slava Fetisov to Detroit.
Bowman often used the five Russians together as a unit - in a way that mystified NHL defenses and thrilled fans at the Joe Louis Arena.
The Russian Five can be view Thursday at 7 p.m., 7:25 p.m., 8 p.m. and 9:20 p.m. There are showings throughout the weekend. Click here for more.
