Cole Daniels is no stranger to competing at the highest level. And winning.

The senior starting quarterback for the Saline football team was the ace of the state champion baseball team last spring. The lefthanded hitter also played in the state championship game as a sophomore.

Daniels was the primary backup to last year’s starting quarterback, Zach Schwartzenberger. After a spring and summer of baseball, Daniels came into football camp and won the starting job.

After a tough start to the season against Rockford, Daniels is finding his groove. He’s gotten better every game – which has been one of the mottos around Saline football in the Joe Palka era.

Meet Cole Daniels

Parents: Brian and Heidi Daniels. I also have a little brother, Camden that is a sophomore.

Describe your comfort level now, compared to week one.
I was pretty nervous for the first game, I’m not sure if it was because we were playing in the big house or what, but each week, I feel much more comfortable.

Coach Palka said that since you spent a lot of the summer playing baseball instead of football, he thinks that you’re going to keep getting better as the season goes on. How much potential for growth do you see in your game?

I think that that I can always keep getting better no matter what the situation is.

Describe what it meant to you to win that Bedford game:

Obviously the Bedford game is always exciting and tough, but to go to there and beat them 31-7 was pretty exciting for the team. The team knew we would all have to focus and play hard and everyone really stepped up and did it. I think it showed the team that we can be really good.

Nobody expects Huron to beat Saline. How do you approach the game so that you don’t experience a let down after an emotional win?

We are going to approach Huron like we would any other team. We will practice hard, focus on this week and look for a win.

What do you like most about Friday nights at Hornet Stadium? I love playing at Hornet Stadium because of the fans. It is really cool to see so many people from the community come to support us every Friday night. I’ve been coming to Saline Football games since I was little and always wanted to run out on the field and play there under the lights.

What's the goal for the team this year?

Every year our goal is to win the state championship!

Game day mentality in one word: Calm

Song that gets you pumped up to play:  “Candy Paint” by Post Malone

Do you have any gameday superstitions/routines? I don’t have any game day superstitions.

Who is the funniest player on the team?  MJ Griffin.

Who’s an unsung hero on this team? Kingsley Amadi because he has been hurt for the past few years, but stuck it out and was able to come back this year and start.

Other sports and extracurricular activities:  I play baseball for Saline High and Little Caesars in the summer.

Favorite subject in school: My favorite class is Connecting with the Exceptional Individual. We get to go to schools in the district and help other students in the classroom.

Favorite ice cream: Cookies and cream

Post high school plans: Attend the University of Kentucky to play baseball and study Special Education.
