Christian Rossi and Noel Sompa scored as Saline defeated Huron, 2-0, to improve to 3-0-1 in the SEC Red. Sam Herner wasn't busy, but made two good saves and earned the shutout.

The Hornets dominated possession and generated dangerous scoring chances throughout the game, but couldn't break through until early in the second half.

Brayden Stavros took a great cross pass and blistered a shot on the Huron goalie, who'd played a marvelous first half. The ball rebounded to Rossi, who buried it in the cage.

Coach Ryan Williams said the goal made him happy.

"We've emphasized second-effort plays and not giving up. Christian stayed with it and kept working and he was rewarded," Williams said.  "Brayden shot with enough pace that even though the goalie made the stop, he couldn't contain it."

Saline made it 2-0 midway through the half when Noel Sompa's centering pass deflected off a Huron player and went past the keeper.

It was a bad break for Huron - but considering all the chances the Hornets had all night, it was well earned for Saline.

Nobody had more chances than senior Zeke Gray, who shredded the Huron defense for opportunity after opportunity. Gray blasted two shots off the football upright's bottom bar and just missed the far corner on a breakaway.

"Zeke had a great game. He can do so many things and he's a talented playmaker. We loved seeing him shoot so much, because we've asked him to be more selfish and take that shot," Williams said.

Saline improved to 3-0-1 and is nearly half way through the SEC Red season.

The Saline Post 3 Stars

  1. Zeke Gray - Didn't score, but dominated the game with midfield play and dribbles through the defense.
  2. Noel Sompa - His goal was on the flukey side, but Sompa continues to be a force for Saline. When at midfield, he provides speed, ball control and passing. When used on the wing, he puts fear in the hearts of defenses.
  3. Brayden Stavros - The Gray-Stavros cross generated all kinds of chaos near the Huron goal and seemed to wear out the River Rats. Stavros's uses quick moves to create room to fire shots when there doesn't seem to be any room.
