SOFTBALL: Kleinschmidt Helps Power Saline to Sweep of Skyline

The Saline Hornets girls’ varsity softball team swept a doubleheader against SEC Red Division rival the Skyline Eagles. The lady Hornets outscored the Eagles by a combined score of 22-7, winning 10-2 and 12-5. The wins were picked up by pitchers junior Alexandra Pace and sophomore Elaina Walker.

In the opener, the Hornets jumped out to a 1-0 in the first. Ashley Heren led off with an infield single and stole second on the first pitch to the next batter. With one out, Pace and senior Kelsey Alexander were hit by the pitch, loading the bases.

Sophomore Abigail Kleinschmidt was walked to force in the first run of the game.

The Hornets added two more runs in the second. Senior Danielle Cobello led the inning off with a double to deep center. Senior Ashley Heren singled to score Cobello. Heren again stole second and scored on a single by Walker. It was 3-0 Saline at the end of two.

The Eagles scored their first run, an unearned run, when two Hornet errors allowed a run to score in the bottom of the third.

Saline scored two more in the top of the fourth on four consecutive singles. Pace singled with two outs. Alexander followed with a single. Junior Emma Schwartzenberger singled to left, scoring Pace and sending Alexander to third.

A single by Kleinschmidt scored Alexander. It was 5-1 Saline at the end of four.

It was in the fifth inning that the lady Hornets blew the game wide open, sending nine batters to the plate, scoring five runs.

Cobello got things started with a leadoff double. Heren singled to center scoring Cobello, with Herren taking second on the throw to the plate. Walker then singled, scoring Heren. Walker took second on a wild pitch.

Pace then sent a 1-1 pitch to center, scoring Walker. After Alexander flied out to center, a sharp double to left-center by Schwartzenberger sent Pace home. A double by Kleinschmidt scored Schwartzenberger to push the fifth run of the inning across the plate. It was 10-1 Saline at the end of five.

The Eagles managed to score one more run in the bottom of the seventh. A one out single got things started. A bounce out sent the runner to second. Another single scored the Eagles’ second run but Pace was able to get the last batter to bounce out second to first to end the game.

The Hornets’ junior pitcher Alexandra Pace threw another gem of a game. She scattered two runs on four hits, through seven innings to pick up the win. The Eagles managed to hit three fly balls to the outfield throughout the entire game.

3rd Star: Abigail Kleinschmidt (0 runs scored, 2 hits, 3 RBIs, 1 walk)


Danielle Cobello started the second game against Skyline but only managed to get one out before being replaced by sophomore pitcher Elaina Walker. Cobello gave up three runs on one hit along with four walks before being pulled.

The Eagles scored another run in the second to take a 4-0 lead at the end of two.

The Hornets then scored eleven runs in the next three innings to put the game away.

Heren reached base on an error to start the third. A single by Walker sent her to second. Pace reached base on a fielder’s choice when Skyline got Heren out at third.

Alexander cleared the bases on a long triple to deep center field.

The lady Hornets sent twelve batters to the plate in the fifth, scoring seven runs. Kleinschmidt got things started with a leadoff single to left.

Senior Madison Shelton singled sharply to center, sending Kleinschmidt to third. A sharp single to center scored Kleinschmidt. Heren’s single to left scored another run.

Walker singled to left scoring another run and a double by Pace knocked in two more. Alexander reached base on an error, with Walker scoring. Kleinschmidt’s second single of the inning scored Pace and Alexander. It was Saline 9 - Skyline 5 at the end of five.

The Hornets added two more runs in the fifth on the strength of a two-run home run to left by Kelsey Alexander.

It was a big offensive explosion by the lady Hornets, combined with some tough pitching and solid defense.

The Hornets will get back into action on Tuesday when they will host the Ann Arbor Huron River Rats in a doubleheader at Hornet Stadium. Game times are 4 & 6 p.m.
