When the final out had been recorded for the lady Hornets’ doubleheader against the undefeated Tecumseh Indians, Saline Head Coach Alicia Seegert described the games perfectly: “We were crushed”.

Like a can of crushed pineapple. The Hornets lost by a combined score of 24-5. 14-5 in the first game, and then 10-0.

The box score:

Saline              5         9          3

Tecumseh       10        20         0

Saline              0         2          1

In the opener, the Hornets jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead when Ashley Heren got a one out single. Alexandra Pace reached first when the Indians’ catcher mishandled a strike three and Pace reached first on the dropped ball.

Abigail Kleinschmidt got a walk to load the bases. Junior Isabella Darmos knocked in two with a single to left.

Tecumseh got one back in the top of the second on a double, a walk and an error by Hornet pitcher Elaina Walker.

The Indians scored three more in the third when the lead-off batter was hit by the pitch, followed by a single. A wild pitch put runners of second and third and a two out double knocked both runners in. Another single scored the third run of the inning and the Indians led 4-2, going into the bottom of the third.

Tecumseh scored two more in the fourth and broke the game open with a five-run fifth inning. Eleven batters went to the plate in the fifth. The first two batters reached base on Saline errors.

Tecumseh then strung together four hits, with another batter hit by the pitch to up their lead to 11-2 heading into the bottom of the fifth.

Saline scored two in their half of the fifth on the strength of a two-run home run to right center field by senior Kelsey Alexander.

Tecumseh added three more runs in the sixth and seventh to cruise to a 14-5 win. Pitcher Madison Citlak raised her record to a perfect 8-0 on the year.

In the second game of the doubleheader, Indians’ pitcher Monica Meger was dominant over the Hornets. Meger scattered two hits over seven innings while pitching a shut-out. Meger raised her record to 4-1 on the year.

Tecumseh jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the first two innings and never looked back. The loss was the Hornets’ fifth out of their last six games, which includes the 3-3 tie at Chelsea. The losses drop Saline’s record to 6-6 on the year.

“We got a little too complacent,” said Seegert following her team’s double loss. “You can’t get complacent if you expect to win. We are young and still learning. We will continue to work to improve”.
