Saline’s varsity girls water polo team bounced back from two Friday night losses to earn a victory and a tie at a tournament held over the weekend at Saline High School.
Friday, Saline lost by identical scores of 6-3 to East Kentwood and Okemos.
Saline bounced back with a 4-4 tie against Huron and a 7-4 win over Pioneer.
The Hornets opened the tournament against East Kentwood, who took a 2-0 lead in the first quarter. Eleanor Smith replied for Saline in the second quarter.
East Kentwood went up 3-1 early in the third quarter. Annika Olsen scored the first of her two goals to make it a one-goal game. East Kentwood scored the next two goals to make it 5-2. Olsen brought Saline to within a goal by tallying with nine seconds left in the quarter. East Kentwood added a goal in the fourth quarter.
Later Friday, Saline fell 6-3 to Okemos. Again, Olsen scored twice and Smith scored once for Saline.
The game was tied 1-1 after the first quarter, with Olsen scoring for Saline. Katie Wagner made several big stops to keep the Hornets close. Okemos scored the only goal in the second quarter. They went up 3-1 with a goal in the third. Okemos opened the scoring in the fourth before Olsen replied for Saline. After a fifth Okemos goal, Smith scored to make it a two-goal affair. Okemos added their sixth goal with 1:30 to play.
Elizabeth Burchart scored four goals and Audrey Cook added a pair as Saline defeated Pioneer, 7-4. Smith also scored for Saline.
Burchart scored the only goal of the first quarter. Pioneer opened the scoring in the second quarter to tie the game. Burchart replied with two goals in 36 seconds to give Saline a 3-1 lead. Pioneer scored twice in the final 1:43 of the period to tie the score at three before halftime.
Burchart scored 1:32 into the third quarter to put Saline up for good. Smith tallied with 2:18 to play in the quarter. Cook added two fourth-quarter goals to make it 7-3. Pioneer added a late goal.
In the other contest, Saline and Huron battled to a 4-4 tie. Sydney Anderson and Smith each scored twice for Saline.
Saline opened the scoring nearly three minutes into the first quarter with a goal by Smith. Less than two minutes later, Anderson scored to make it 2-1. Huron scored with 46 seconds left in the period. The River Rats tied the game with a goal in the second quarter. Smith gave Saline a 3-2 lead with a goal 2:24 into the third period. With 1:24 left to play in the quarter, Anderson scored to make it 4-2. But Huron got a goal with 25 seconds left in the period to close the gap. They tied the game with 1:40 to play in the game.
