Eight Saline wrestlers advanced to next Saturday’s regional tournament at Saline High School, keeping their Ford Field hopes alive.
The MHSAA individual district wrestling tournament was held at Novi High School Saturday. Eight Hornets placed in the top four in their weight class to advance to the regional tournament, where the top four wrestlers in each class will advance to the state championship.
Cade Gilless (29-10) finished second at 171 pounds. Gilless began his day by pinning Huron’s Aidan Griswold in 39 seconds. Then he won a 9-4 decision over Canton’s Christopher Little in the semifinal. He lost a 12-6 decision to JaQuan Baker, of Salem in the final.
Zach Sabin (33-8) was second at 215 pounds. Sabin began his day by pinning Salem’s Warren Cox at 1:50. In the semifinal he won a 7-3 decision over Ypsilanti’s Mahdy Abdellatif. In the final he was pinned by DCC’s Brendan Yatooma.
Kolton Malinczak (16-8) took second place at 130 pounds. Malinczak pinned Salem’s Connor Armstrong and then won a 7-2 decision over Belleville’s Shawn Burke before losing a 10-1 decision to DCC’s Camden Trupp in the final
Luke Hoyt (27-17) finished second at 135 pounds. Hoyt pinned his first opponent, Matthew Myles, in 46 seconds. He then won a 4-1 decision over Pioneer’s Jacob Williams. In the finals he was pinned by DCC’s Joshua Edmont.
Elliot Hill (31-6) was third at 145 pounds. Hill won his first match by pinning Plymouth’s Hunter LeForge at 3:08. He lost by pin in the semifinal to DCC’s Logan Samon. He won his blood-round match by a 10-2 decision and then won his consolation final by a 9-0 decision.
Brent Marvin (35-11) was third at 103 pounds). Marvin began the day by pinning Brandon Watkins, of Canton, at 1:15 of the first period. He lost to eventual district champ Anthony Walker, of Detroit Catholic Central. Marvin won his blood round match against Salem’s Dylan Fleming and then won his consolation final against Jack Gattoni, of Northville.
Harrison Hill (16-12) finished fourth at 152 pounds. Hill lost his opening round by pin to DCC’s Cameron Amine, who won the district. He bounced back with two straight 4-3 decisions to earn a spot in the regional and then dropped a 7-5 decision in the consolation final.
At 112 pounds, Brett Thornell placed fourth. He pinned Skyline’s Diego Tambriz in his first match before losing to district champ Caleb White, of DCC, in the semi. Thornell won a 3-1 decision in the blood round to advance. In the consolation final he lost a 4-3 decision.
