Saline juniors Cade Gilless and Zach Sabin are going to Ford Field.
Gilless and Sabin made the final four at the MHSAA Regional wrestling tournament held at Saline High School Saturday to advance to the state championship tournament, held March 1-2 at Ford Field in Detroit.
It’s the first time either wrestler has qualified for the state championship.
At 171 pounds, Gilless, 32-11, defeated Westland John Glenn’s Justin Morrison by tech fall (20-4 decision) in his opening match. In the semifinal, he was pinned by Bedford rival and regional champion Colin Jagielski. That set up a win-or-go-home match in the blood round against Wayne’s Jalen Adams (31-15). Gilless won by pin at 4:32 to reach the final four and qualify for the state tournament. In the consolation final, Gilless won a 7-6 decision over Livonia Franklin’s Erick Reaves (49-6). Winning the consolation final could help Gilless avoid a state champion candidate in the first round at the state meet and improve his chances of making the podium.
At 215, Sabin, 35-10, opened the day by defeating Woodhaven’s Markus Sturgill with a 10-2 decision. In the semifinal, Sabin lost to Bedford’s Blake Wingate by pin. That set up the blood round matchup against Livonia Churchill’s Matt Wilson. Sabin pinned Wilson in 1:46 to advance to the consolation final and qualify for the state tournament. In the consolation round, Sabin lost a 4-3 decision to Ypsilanti’s Mahdy Abdellatif.
Sabin and Gilless were two of eight Hornets who qualified for the regional.
At 103, Brent Marvin lost by pin to Wyandotte Roosevelt’s Alex Blundo in the opening round. Marvin stayed alive with an 11-9 win over Woodhaven’s Marcello Luna. But Marvin’s season came to a close when he lost a 6-2 decision to Southgate’s Adrian Rosas. He finished the season with a 36-13 record.
At 112 pounds, Brett Thornell, 24-15, was pinned in the opening round. He was eliminated in an 11-10 decision loss to Belleville’s Justice Shafer.
At 130 pounds, Kolton Malinczak, 16-10, lost a 10-6 decision in his first match. He was eliminated by Southgate’s Ryan Cacicedo by pin.
At 135 pounds, Luke Hoyt lost a 10-2 decision in the opening round. He bounced back to pin Ann Arbor Pioneer’s William Hebert but was eliminated when he lost a 4-0 decision to Bedford’s Randy Boiselle. Hoyt finished with a 28-19 record.
At 145, Elliot Hill, 32-8, lost by pin in the opening round. He bounced back by pinning Wyandotte Roosevelt’s Dominic DuPrie but he was eliminated in the next round in an 8-2 decision.
At 152, Harrison Hill was pinned in the opening round and eliminated by pin in his next match.
