In high school athletics, it's the head coaches that get all the credit. Organizers of the Golden Triangle Meet at Saline High School use one of the biggest track meets of the year to honor the best of the thousands of assistant coaches who dedicate hours to helping Michigan's young student-athletes.
Friday, popular Saline High School cross country and track coach Matt Hagood was one of two people honored with "Assistant Coach of the Year Award." Hagood as been a cross country assistant to Mike Smith for more than a dozen years. He coached track for the last five years. Hagood has played an important role in helping to shape one of the state's best and deepest distance running programs.
Hagood graduated from Saline High School in 1980. He ran track and cross country and wrestled.
Even though the Golden Triangle is one of the year's most competitive meets, a small army of Hornet distance runners took time away from their preparation to recognize Hagood during the meet.
