Meet Next Level Scholar Athlete John Smutny

A triumvirate of Saline Hornet football players celebrated milestones with family, teammates and coaches on college signing day at Saline High School last week.

John Smutny will continue his studies and playing days at Grand Valley State University. Max Recknagel and Nic Sawyer will continue their studies and playing days at Saginaw Valley State University.

Today, The Saline Post features John Smutny, son of Bill Smutny and Julie White.

Coach Joe Palka On Jon Smutny: He provided us with great leadership.  He led by example and always worked to get better. I believe he will project into an interior D lineman or he would make an excellent O lineman as well. He will not be outworked.

What do you plan to study: Engineering

Highlight of your SHS football career? Beating Bedford 16-14, junior year,

How do you think coach Palka's program prepared you for the next step? He created the expectation of getting "one day better" in everything you do. Whether in the game or in practice. Making the most of your time at practice.

When did you realize you might be college material? When college coaches were actively calling and emailing me.

How do you feel about getting the chance to play college football? I feel like it's a chance to renew myself with a new team and new teammates.

Football stats: 61 tackles, 1 interception in senior year.

Football honors: (Senior Year) Team Defensive Player of the Year, Honorable-Mention All-State, SEC All-Conference, AnnArbor.com Dream Team.

Honors from other sports, academic: Track and Field (Three time SEC All-Conference, Two Time Conference Discus Champion, State Meet Qualifier), National Honors Society (Three years), Four year Honor Roll, Member of SADD.
