The Saline High School girls track and field team defeated Pioneer for the second time in three days Saturday at the April Showers relays at Dexter High School.
The Hornets finished with 109 points. Pioneer was second with 74 points, one better than third place East Kentwood in the 11-team relay meet.
The Hornets won four of the nine relay events on the track. Saline won the 4-by-800 by nearly four seconds. The 1600 sprint medley team won their event by more than 14 seconds. The 4-by-100 avenged Thursday's loss to Pioneer by winning the event by .05 seconds to finish in 49.47. The distance medley relay team defeated second place Pioneer by nearly 19 seconds.
East Kentwood edged Saline by .06 seconds to win the shuttle hurdle relay. Saline also settled for second in the 4-by-200 relay, where East Kentwood won once again.
Hailey Mayes (4th, 48.78) and Janell Green (6th, 49.77) helped Saline to a second place finish in the 300 hurdles relay won by Pioneer. Saline also placed second to Pioneer in the 800 meter sprint relay and fifth in the 4-by-400 relay.
In the open 1600, Gillian Walter was second (5:20.96) to Macomb Dakota's Mara Pugh. Abby Rentschler was fifth (5:23.87) and Haleigh Cummings was ninth (5:45.97).
Saline didn't pick up many points in the field, but there were a couple of strong performances.
Wendy Szuminski was tied for first in pole vault, clearing 10-6. Amelia Wittig threw 101-5 in the discus to place second overall. Cathy Dager finished second in the long jump (15-08). Erin Connor was third in the shot put (33-05).
Emily Diehl won the junior varsity women's 1600 meter run in 5:47.69. Danielle Fillmore, Taelor Young, Alexa Reyst and Jenny Kise gave Saline five of the top seven in the race.
