An Ann Arbor man arraigned on sexual assault and child pornography charges Oct. 5 has connections to a popular Saline-based youth volleyball program.

Ryan Thomas Mortensen, 38, was arrested by Michigan State Police in Ann Arbor. He was arraigned in 15th District Court in Ann Arbor Saturday on six charges, including criminal sexual assault first degree, criminal sexual conduct third degree (with a person 13-15 years old), child sexually abusive activity, and possession of child pornography.

Court documents list the offense date as May 24, 2019.

According to Mlive, Mortensen’s bond was set at $50,000.

All About Ann Arbor reported the Michigan State Police Internet Crimes Against Children task force investigated Mortensen after a cyber tip through the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children website

Mortensen was associated with the Huron Valley Volleyball Club, a youth volleyball organization serving hundreds of youth out of its Saline facility on Woodland Drive. According to his LinkedIn Page, Mortensen was the facility director and tournament director.  A source close to the club told The Saline Post he worked for the club in 2011-12. The source said Mortensen did not coach the athletes. He maintained and cleaned the facility and helped organize tournaments.

According to a Google cached Concordia Volleyball page, Mortensen was an assistant coach for Concordia University. He was also coach of the University of Michigan’s club team and coach of the Michigan Elite Volleyball Academy Coach. Several Michigan Elite Volleyball Facebook Page posts mentioning Mortensen have been deleted.

An Ann Arbor Public Schools webpage lists Mortensen as coach of a Clague Middle School volleyball. A Google cache of the Schoolcraft College volleyball page lists Mortensen as assistant coach of the 2019 team. His name has since been removed although he remains in the team picture.

According to Saline Area Schools Assistant Superintendent for Human Resources Curt Ellis,, there are no records indicating Mortensen coached or worked in the school district.

Mortensen’s preliminary hearing is set for Oct. 17.
