A Saline High School student who was found unresponsive in a locker room Friday afternoon has died
Ryan Estrada, a junior, wrestled in the heavyweight division and was an offensive lineman on the football team this fall.
According to a statement released Saturday by Superintendent Scot Graden, Estrada became unresponsive while in the locker room before wrestling practice.
"Fellow teammates quickly contacted staff who began treatment. EMS arrived at the scene and continued to provide support for Ryan," Graden wrote.
Chad French, spokesperson for Huron Valley Ambulance, said a patient was transported from Saline High School in critical condition. He was transported to the University of Michigan Hospital.
"Ryan will be remembered for his humor, his big smile, his love of University of Michigan athletics, and his gregarious personality," Graden wrote. "Our hearts and thoughts go out to Ryan’s family, friends and teachers."
The Saline High School Crisis Team will be available to provide support to students at school Monday.
"Please be watchful of your children. We encourage you to reach out to counselors, administrators and teachers if your child needs support in order to help with the grieving process," Graden wrote.
(This story has been corrected. It originally reported that Ryan Estrada collapsed at wrestling practice. In fact, he suffered his medical episode in the locker room before practice.)
