Cole Daniels pitched seven strong innings for the win and went 3-for-3 at the plate as Saline defeated Bedford, 8-2, to open the SEC Red season at Bedford High School Wednesday.
Saline scored three runs in the second inning and never looked back.
Ethan Collick went 3-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored. Jack O'Keefe went 2-for-4 with an RBI and run scored. Noah Nelson, Reagan Miller, Alex Morrison, Logan Evans and Vinnie Patteri also had hits. Morrison drove in three runs.
Daniels went the distance, striking out 14 batters in seven innings. He walked one and gave up four hits. One of the two runs he gave up was earned.
Saline got on the scoreboard in the second inning. Daniels led with a single to right. He moved to second when Morrison reached on an error. O'Keefe scored Daniels and Morrison with a single to left. Patteri doubled to right to score O'Keefe and give Saline the 3-0 lead.
Saline scored two in the fourth. Again, it started with the lead-off runner reaching base. Paul Kiyabu walked. With two out, Jacob Ohren-Hoeft reached on an infield error. Collick followed with a double to right, scoring one. Bedford walked Daniels to load the bases. Morrison walked to bring in Saline's fifth run.
Saline scored two more in the sixth. Nelson led with a single to left. He took second on Ohren-Hoeft's ground out and then scored on a single to left by Collick. Daniels followed with a double to center. Both Daniels and Collick scored on Morrison's single to center. O'Keefe doubled with two out, but Bedford escaped further harm.
