The Saline girls varsity cross country team opened the SEC season with a strong race at Hudson Mills Metropark Tuesday.
Led by sophomore Madi Wood, Saline placed second in the 13-team combined SEC Red & White jamboree.
Pioneer, led by Zofia Dudek (1st, 18:05) placed four runners in the top six and won with 25 points. Saline finished with 42 points. Tecumseh was third with 94.
Dudek won the race by more than a minute, finishing in 18:05. Sophomore Sarah Forsyth, of Pioneer was second in 19:16.35.
They were followed in by a pair of Hornets. Wood (3rd, 19:33.47) and senior Nicole Dillman (4th, 19:54.26) were next. The Pioneers then sent the next two girls, Anna Vogel and Cookie Baugh, over the line.
Saline sophomore Madison Stern (8th, 20:28.2), senior Jenna Allman (12th, 20:49.18) and senior Ella Woehlke (15th, 20:57.02) also finished in the scoring.
Also running varsity for Saline were Claire Endre Endres (20th, 20:21), senior Haley Greene (21st, 21:30), senior Ashley Desimone (27th, 22:08), and sophomore Lydia Alig (39th, 22:39).
The Hornets dominated the reserve race, winning with 18 points. Pioneer was second with 54.
Junior Ava Ignacio was the winner in 22:21.9. Aubrey Stager and Madeline Stewart finished second and third. Also in the scoring were Maekaya Rice, 5th, and Amanda Lin, 7th.
