Saline swept a doubleheader from Pioneer Monday to open the SEC season and improve to 8-0.
Saline won 13-0 and 12-1.
Cole Daniels homered and pitched five-shutout innings in the opener. Daniels gave up three hits and two walks while striking out five. Tyler Zmich and Justin Flanagan each pitched an inning of scoreless relief.
Saline pounded 12 hits of Pioneer.
Kellan Huang was 3-for-4 with a walk and RBI, Sean O’Keefe was 2-for-4 with three RBI and a run and Daniels hit a home run. Ryan Foley had two singles and two runs scored. Jayden Beslkus was 2-for-4 with a double and three RBI. Ethan Collick doubled and drove in a run. Zach Schwartzenberger tripled and scored two runs.
Saline scored two runs in the second, three in the third and four in the fourth before putting the game away with six runs in the sixth.
In the nightcap, Danny Weidmayer pitched a five-inning four-hitter, giving up an unearned run. He struck out one and walked one. O’Keefe’s first-inning grand slam set the tone for the Hornets, who stroked 12 hits of Pioneer pitching.
Foley (2-for-4, 2 runs), Huang (2-for-2, 3 runs), and Jake Finkbeiner (2-for-3, 1 run, 1 RBI) each had multiple hits. Huang, Schwartzenberger (1-for-2, 2 runs, 1 RBI) and Logan Evans hit doubles for the Hornets.
Saline hosts Pioneer Wednesday.
