The Saline varsity boys’ cross country team placed second at the Spartan Elite meet Friday at Michigan State University.

Saline finished with 195 points. Only Louisville, from Ohio, finished better than Saline in the 39 school race. The Hornets are the top ranked team in the state.
Junior Anthony DeKraker was the fastest Hornet, completing the 5K course in a season’s best 16:08. DeKraker finished 17th overall. DeLraker lopped nearly a minute of his time from the SEC Jamboree.
Senior Aidan Carichner was 31st in 16:23. Jevin Nishioka was 45th in 16:39. Evan Koerschner (52nd, 16:42) and Connor Meehan (64th, 16:52) also figured into the Hornets’ scoring. Joshua Cook was 70th in 16:56.
Derek Liemohn was second in the junior varsity race. Liemohn finished in 17:33. Neil Garg was second in 17:35 and William Downey was fourth in a personal best 17:40. Simon Pfeiffer (9th, 17:51) and Toby Mepham (27th, 18:13) also figured into the scoring. Grand Rapids Christian won the event with 37 points, six better than second-place Saline.
The Hornets were second in the middle school race, finishing with 135 points. Derek Caldwell was the fastest Hornets, finishing sixth in 11:30. Also in the scoring were Noah Pelletier (14th, 11:52), Benjamin Wild (27th, 12:12), Jason Whitton (36th, 12:14) and Jamie Harrison (52nd, 12:26).
The Hornets won the middle school reserve race with 28 points. Sixth grader Dolan Gonzales won the race in 12:45. Eighth grader was listed in second place, also with a time of 12:45.
Jacob Miller (6th, 13:06), Max Pfeiffer (9th, 13:14) and Thomas Wooldridge (10th, 13:19) also figured into the scoring for Saline.

- Anthony DeKraker – DeKraker was Saline’s top runner by the end of his sophomore year, so it’s good to see him hitting his stride. His time of 16:08 matched his time at MIS last year.
- Aidan Carichner – Another meet, another great outing for Carichner.
- Jevin Nishioka – The sophomore ran another great race for the Hornets.
