Dylan Powers was crowned district champion for the 189-pound weight class Saturday at Westland John Glenn.
Powers and Daniel Poupore (125 pounds) were the only two Hornets to advance to Saturday’s regional at Saline High School.
Powers, 37-1, barely broke a sweat. Hhad a bye in the first round. In the second round he pinned Markus Sturgill in 54 seconds. In the semifinal he pinned Bedford’s Hunter Gandee in 35 seconds. He won the championship bout against Josh Dodd with a pin at 1:04.
Danny Poupore, 41-2, lost a 3-1 decision to Southgate Anderson’s Donte Rivera-Garcia in the 125-pound championship match. Poupore advanced through round one with a bye. In round two he pinned Skyline’s Oscar Anderson in 1:05. In the semifinals Poupore won a 5-4 decision against Westland John Glenn’s Isaac Lefler.
At 215, Dylan Hughes narrowly missed advancing. He won a 2-1 decision but was pinned in the blood round.
Freshman CJ Kraft won his 145-pound opening round match by a pin. He lost in round two but bounced back with a pin before losing a 12-7 decision to Zachary Buho, who placed third.
Senior Ethan Copabianco won a 12-2 decision in round one before being pinned in round two. Capobianco won a 3-1 decision before losing a 10-3 decision to the eventual third place finisher Levi Elarton of Bedford.
Freshman Zach Sabin, 189 points, won the opening round with a pin before dropping two bouts.
At 103, David Gould won by pin in the first round but dropped his next two bouts. At 119 Elliot Hill won by pin in the opening round but dropped his next two bouts.
