The Saline varsity softball team continued their winning ways sweeping a doubleheader against the Ann Arbor River Rats Tuesday afternoon at Hornet Stadium. The Hornets made quick work of the River Rats, winning the opener 16-1, with the game called after Saline scored ten runs in the bottom of the fourth to gain a 15-run lead. Alexandra Pace, the Hornets junior pitcher, picked up the win.
In game two, the Hornets erupted for a 15-run second inning. Sophomore hurler Elaina Walker gave up a two out double to the River Rats in the top of the third but managed to get the next batter to pop out to short, securing the 15-0 win.
Think about that. Saline scored enough runs in both games to settle both games by the mercy rule. The lady Hornets scored 31 runs in six innings of offense. While Saline was firing on all cylinders, to call the River Rats’ team as struggling, would be an understatement.
Pace pitched another strong game for Saline in the opener. She gave up one run, scattering four hits with four strike outs over four innings of work.
The Hornets opened the game by scoring four runs in the first. Walker hit a one out single to left. Pace walked after Walker had stolen second. Senior Kelsey Alexander singled to left, scoring Walker.
Junior Emma Schwartzenberger cleared the bases with a double to left center and scored on an error off the bat of Madison Shelton.
Saline upped their lead to 5-0 in the second when junior Isabella Darmos singled to lead off the second inning. Darmos took second on a wild pitch. Senior Ashley Heren walked to put runners on first and second. Pace was hit by the pitch to load the bases.
Alexander hit a fly to center field which scored Darmos from third.
The Hornets added another run in the third when sophomore Abigail Kleinschmidt led off with a single to left. Junior second baseman Madison Shelton walked and took second on a fielder’s choice by Danielle Cobello, when the River Rats threw out Kleinschmidt at third.
Shelton scored on a single by Darmos to give Saline 6-0 lead at the end of three.
The River Rats scored their sole run of the game in the fourth on three consecutive singles. Pace got a strike out and a ground out to end the inning.
The lady Hornets sent 13 batters to the plate in their half of the fourth. Walker led the inning off with a single. She took second on a wild pitch. Pace, Alexander and Schwartzenberger all walked that allowed Walker to score. Kleinschmidt doubled to left scoring Pace and Alexander, sending Schwartzenberger to third.
After Shelton bounced out, Cobello knocked in a run with a single. Darmos walked to force in another run. Walker was hit by a pitch, sending another Hornet across the plate.
Walks to Pace and Alexander, followed by a single by Schwartzenberger ended the game as the Hornets scored ten runs in the fourth.
